Spring Cleaning Tips

Well folks, its that time of year again. Its time break out the mop and bucket and give your home a good, through cleaning in preparation of the upcoming seasons. Spring cleaning might elicit some moans and groans from people, but it really does help. De-cluttering and cleaning your home in spring sets you up for a summer feeling fresh, invigorated and accomplished as well. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

Use Pegboards to Re-organize

Aside from cleaning, springtime is great to de-clutter and re-organize stuff, from the supply closets and drawers inside to the garage or shed outside. Start buy separating the stuff you don’t need any more from the stuff you are planning to keep. With the stuff you are ditching, if the items are still in good condition try to look for avenues to donate it but if that is not viable try to recycle when you can. For the stuff you are going to keep, try not to simply throw it all back in the drawers and shelves that they were in but re-organize in a way that will better utilize space.

One of the best ways to do this, whether you have tools or any other supplies, is to put up some pegboard. Pegboard allows you to turn wall space into storage space with ease, helping you to de-clutter shelves, drawers and floor space. Feel free to check out some of our pegboard kits and see which one would work best for your spring cleaning project.

Cleaning the Carpets/Upholstery

Carpets and upholstery are notorious for trapping and holding dirt and bacteria. Making sure you give them a deep cleaning will not only make the carpets and upholstery look better, but it will also decrease the chances of catching a bug as well.

Most supermarkets have cleaners available for rent for those looking to tackle the task themselves. If you are going to go that route, test the process on a small corner of the carpet to make sure the shampoo doesn’t stain or discolor. After cleaning, opening the windows can speed up the drying process. Of course, if you have wall-to-wall carpet and the DIY approach just wont work for you, you can always hire a professional.

Wipe Down The Walls

It might not look like it, but dust and dirt can cling to vertical surfaces just as well as horizontal surfaces. Using a magic eraser-type sponge works great for getting dust and marks off of flat paint without staining the paint itself. You can also use a warm water and dishwasher detergent mix as well, but be sure to test the mix on a small section to make sure it doesn’t stain the paint. Semi gloss paint holds up a lot better against water, so simply wetting a clean rag works quite well to remove built up dust on walls.
